Paula Winkler, MEd

 

 

Ms. Winkler received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas Tech University and her Masters of Education degree from Southern Methodist University. She has over 30 years of experience developing linkages between academic programs to community based health promotion/disease prevention initiatives. As the South Central Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Director, Ms. Winkler has assisted to facilitate the partnership of community based health and social agencies to the training and education health professions programs and community based research efforts at medical schools in Illinois and Texas. At the South Central AHEC, a project of the Center for South Texas Programs at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, Ms. Winkler directs the Center within a 12 county catchments area with the largest county being Bexar and the metro San Antonio area. AHEC works closely with Practice Based Research Networks (PBRNs) in south Texas to foster practice improvement initiatives and to increase opportunity for translational research to community members. Her current community based research interests include childhood obesity, teen pregnancy and developmental disabilities. Ms. Winkler currently serves on numerous area community advisory committees that focus on developing health promotion and information dissemination programs within the south central Texas. Some of these committees include Mision Luterana Promotores Committee, Movimiento Now! and the San Antonio Educational Partnership. She also serves on the board of the Texas Rural Health Association.  Ms. Winkler is currently a Co-Investigator on the Community Engagement Core Function of the NIH CTSA project award to UTHSCSA in 2008.
