Barbara J. Turner, MD, MSED, MACP

 

 

Barbara J Turner MD, MSED,  MACP is Professor of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, Director of Health Outcomes Research, University Health System. She was formerly the Executive Deputy Editor of the Annals of Internal Medicine and a Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.  Dr. Turner is a practicing general internist and health services researcher focusing on vulnerable populations and health disparities using administrative databases to evaluate care. Dr. Turner has over 140 peer-reviewed publications and editorials on: quality of ambulatory care; cardiovascular and cancer preventive care; HIV care; chronic pain/opioid use; substance abuse; primary care practice redesign; and patient adherence to care. She has directed several randomized clinical trials that use peer coaches to improve receipt of needed cancer preventive services and to reduce cardiovascular risk in high risk African-Americans.  She was formerly the Director of the Primary Care NRSA Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.  Dr Turner has served as Regent of the American College of Physicians (ACP) and President of the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM). She was also Chair of HRSA’s Advisory Committee on Training in Primary Care Medicine and Dentistry.  She has received grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, among others.
