Carlos R. Jaén, MD, PhD

 

 

Dr. Jaén is Professor and Chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine and holds the Dr. and Mrs. James L. Holly Distinguished Professorship at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.  He is co-director of the Center for Research in Family Medicine and Primary Care.  During the past two decades, the Center has studied nearly 500 predominantly independent, community-based primary care practices.  Dr. Jaén’s research has focused on preventive care for individuals of all ages, especially primary and secondary prevention of chronic diseases including diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. He has served on national expert panels that developed and updated smoking cessation guidelines. From 2005-2008, he served on the National Advisory Council to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). He received a Generalist Physician Faculty Scholar Award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and a Cancer Control Career Development Award for Primary Care Physicians from the American Cancer Society. He is a practicing family physician and has annually been among the Best Doctors in America since 2002. Previously, he served as medical director at the Niagara Family Health Center and was in private practice in Ohio. Dr. Jaén’s current interests include building a healthier San Antonio through community wellness initiatives.
