She completed her BSc and MSc in Physical Therapy at the University of Alberta in Canada and also received the first PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences from the University of Alberta. Dr. Simmonds has 15 years of clinical experience in England and Canada, where she ultimately specialized in pain management. Following completion of her doctoral degree she joined the faculty at Texas Woman’s University, where she was also Director of the Pain and Performance Research Laboratory and adjunct faculty at University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. She has held major academic and strategic leadership roles at major universities and scientific and professional societies in the UK, Canada, Australia, and the USA.   She was recently Director of the School of Physical and Occupational Therapy, and Associate Dean (Rehabilitation) in the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University and Director of the Canadian Foundation for Innovation funded Pain, Mind and Movement Research Lab Network.  In the UK, Canada, and the USA she has been instrumental in building research and research partnerships within, and at the interface of academic and clinical environments.  Dr. Simmonds’ clinical and academic experiences in England, Canada, the USA, and Australia have given her a unique and global perspective on health, health care delivery, and health care education and this has driven her consistently funded interdisciplinary and integrated lab and clinically based research on understanding, measuring and managing pain, mind and movement (function) across chronic health conditions.  She has also focused on understanding the role of the practitioner as well as the patient and the intervention on outcomes.  Thus a parallel research focus is on gaining a better understanding of those aspects of health professions training that lead to gaps between best-evidence research, best-evidence education, and best-evidence clinical practice. Dr. Simmonds uses simple and sophisticated technologies including virtual reality in her research. She has more than 100 publications holds many scientific advisory and editorial roles, and is a frequently invited national and international speaker.
