UT Health Science Center San Antonio Laser Safety Program

Lasers are regulated by the Texas Department of State Health Services, Radiation Control, in Texas Administrative Code (TAC), Title 25, §289.301 (the Code). The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, in order to comply with the Code, has established a Laser Safety Program. The purpose of the Program is to provide clear guidance for the use of regulated Lasers, and to provide references for those who wish to learn more about safe use of Lasers.

As required by the Code, Radiation Safety maintains an inventory every Class 3B and Class 4 laser on campus. In order to keep this inventory up-to-date, all lasers that are purchased must be approved by Radiation Safety. This allows us to ensure that our records are as up-to-date as possible.

Because Lasers can cause damage to the eye in a very short period of time, it is critical that all those who work with or around Lasers utilize protective eyewear and follow established laboratory safety guidelines.

In addition to the annual safety evaluations performed by the Radiation Safety Division, the Primary Investigator or the Laser Custodian in charge of each laser must also perform their own independent, documented safety evaluation. To maintain safety in your labs, please download and print a copy of our Laser Safety Evaluation (PDF). It will provide you with a safety checklist to assist you in evaluating laser-related hazards.

Your laser must have available to laser operators a Laser Safety Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). A template of an acceptable SOP is available as a PDF or Word document. All laser operators must sign off verifying that they have read and understand the Standard Operating Procedures.
