COURSE TRAINING SCHEDULE

May - July 2008

Instructor: Valerie Fey – Environmental Health & Safety

This is a 50-minute course open to all UTHSCSA employees & volunteer staff, but designed specifically for UTHSCSA clinical and research faculty and staff, Custodial Services, Facilities Mgmt., UTHSCSA Police, DLAR and Administrative staff whose biological exposure risk involves human/primate blood, body fluids, tissues and human cell lines.  It satisfies both the September 2000 Texas Department of State Health Services requirements for training in bloodborne pathogens, and the OSHA bloodborne pathogen training requirements [29 CFR 1910.1030(g)(2)(vii)].  It also provides an awareness level of DOT requirements [49 CFR 173.199(e)] for shipping biological products and infectious substances.  New employees (including UTHSCSA transfer employees), whose normal duties place them at risk of exposure to human blood and other potentially infectious materials including, blood products, tissues, or body fluids and human cell lines are required to attend this training prior to their initial assignment to those duties.  Current employees working with these materials must attend this training annually, within one year of their previous training date.

This course is equivalent to the web-based Safety - Bloodborne Pathogens Safety Awareness Course offered through the UTHSCSA Knowledge Centre at  https://kc.uthscsa.edu/kc/login.asp
Employees have the option of taking the web-based course or attending the classroom training.

NOTE: This training DOES NOT SATISFY DOT (49 CFR 172.700)/IATA/ICAO training requirements for shipping HAZARDOUS MATERIALS/DANGEROUS GOODS such as Class 6 - INFECTIOUS SUBSTANCES or Class 9 - DRY ICE.  For more information on Shipping training see http://research.uthscsa.edu/safety/transport.shtml

Non-UTHSCSA employees may attend this course but must also receive additional training in their respective Exposure Control Plan.
