This is a 20-hour course designed specifically for UTHSCSA and STVHCS personnel working with radioactive material who must meet the training requirements of the Radioactive Material License. This training is required for personnel who cannot furnish documentation of up to nine hours of prior training acceptable to the Radiation Safety Committee or the Radiation Safety Officer. This training must be completed within the first year.

The course is designed to present detailed information of the property and characteristics of radiation, the biological effects of radiation, radiation units, regulatory requirements, dosimetry levels for radiation workers and declared pregnant workers, the common types and uses of radioactive material at UTHSCSA, the policies including security requirements for handling, use and storage of radioactive material, package ordering and receiving, general laboratory handling rules, waste disposal, signage and posting requirements, emergency response, and decontamination. An exam is given at the course completion. Persons successfully completing the course will receive a certificate of completion.
