 Basic Laser Safety Training Course
This is a one hour course designed specifically for UT Health Science Center at San Antonio personnel performing laser research protocols using Class 3B or Class 4 equipment who have not received documented laser safety training previously. This includes all persons working with the lasers, i.e., faculty, staff, students, and volunteers. Persons may provide a copy of a certificate or letter of completion for a course in laser safety from another institution completed within the preceding two years, or successfully complete this course.  Refresher training is required every two years.

The course is designed to cover fundamental properties of laser and laser safety, basic laser design, laser hazards, non-beam hazards, biological effects, administrative safety practices, general safety practices, administrative and engineering controls, personal protective equipment, laser classification, common accidents and emergency procedures.


Medical Laser Safety Training Course
This is a one hour course designed specifically for UT Health Science Center at San Antonio physicians and clinic personnel performing or present during any laser procedures utilizing Class 3B or Class 4 medical lasers. This includes all persons working with the lasers, i.e., faculty, staff, students, and volunteers. Persons may provide a copy of a certificate or letter of completion for a course in laser safety from another institution completed within the preceding two years, or successfully complete this course.  Refresher training is required every two years.

The course is designed to cover fundamental properties of medical lasers and laser safety, medical laser design, medical laser hazards, non-beam hazards, biological effects, administrative safety practices, general safety practices, administrative and engineering controls, personal protective equipment, laser classification, common accidents and emergency procedures.

Both the Basic Laser Safety Module & the Medical Laser Safety Module are available online in the Knowledge Center.  The course to complete depends upon the types of lasers you will be using.  Completion of only one of the above training courses is required.

 

If you are  UHS Employee or a UT Employee without access to the Knowledge Center, you may attend an in-person training session.  The training schedule for in-person training is outlined in the table below:
