This is a one hour course designed specifically for UTHSCSA personnel performing laser protocols using Class IIIB or Class IV equipment who have not received documented laser safety training previously. This includes all persons working with radioactive material, i.e., faculty, staff, students, and volunteers. Persons may provide a copy of a certificate or letter of completion for a course in laser safety from another institution or successfully complete this course.
The course is designed to cover fundamental properties of laser and laser safety, basic laser design, laser hazards, non-beam hazards, biological effects, administrative safety practices, general safety practices, administrative and engineering controls, personal protective equipment, laser classification, common accidents and emergency procedures.
