This is a 9-hour course designed specifically for UTHSCSA laboratory personnel working with radioactive material for non-human use who must meet training requirements of the Radioactive Material License. This training is required for personnel who cannot furnish documentation of prior training acceptable to the Radiation Safety Committee. The training must be completed within the first year. (Principal investigators, human-use personnel, and graduate students need to be taking the 20 hours course.)
This course is designed to present general information of radioactivity, biological effects of radiation, radiation units, dose limits, declared pregnant workers, UTHSCSA policies, laboratory safety rules, and individual radioisotope characteristics and handling precautions. The policies include security requirements, package ordering and receiving, storage and handling of radiation, waste management, posting and signs, and proper emergency response. An exam is given at the course completion. Persons successfully completing the course will receive a certificate of completion.
