University Research Council (URC) Grants Program
Deadline: 11:59 pm on the 15th of January, May, and September, Deadline days that fall on a weekend or holiday will be moved to the next official business day.
The URC Grants Program provides funds for new investigators, pilot projects, and faculty enrichment. It is modeled after the former Institutional HHMI grants program. The former Institutional Research Grant program has become a part of this grants program. The earliest start date for an URC grant is approximately 6 weeks following the receipt deadline.
Projects Supported: The goal of the URC Grants Program is to foster and stimulate research at UTHSCSA. Several mechanisms will be supported by this fund.New Investigator Funds (<40K)
This part of the URC Grants Program is designed to support recruitment and development of new faculty. Support under this program will be limited to junior faculty (assistant professor). Applications may be made up to three years following appointment.Pilot Projects (<15K)
The primary purpose of these grants is to provide initial seed money to support innovative high quality research projects in their early phases and/or fund research in new areas of research when outside funding is not available.Faculty Enrichment (<5K)
The program will contribute to the overall scientific environment through support for:
• Visiting scientists
• Development Leave
• Special Programs

Certification of Proposal (COP)
- The application requires the following PHS 398 (Rev. 4/06) forms:
- Form Page 4: Detailed Budget for Initial Budget Period
- Form Page 5: Budget for Entire Proposed Period of Support
- Biographical Sketch Format Page - special instructions: On the Biographical Sketch Format Page, section C Research Support include award amounts and percent effort in projects.
- Other Support: NIH Sample Format (please note, New Investigator Funds proposals should include other support of applicant only, not mentor)These forms are available in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) and MS Word formats from the NIH website: Instructions and Form Files for PHS 398. PLEASE NOTE, this site includes all the PHS 398 forms, not only those necessary for URC applications. Please refer to the URC Checklist above for the required forms for each of the URC programs.

- Applications should be uploaded as a PDF file by 11:59 p.m. on the deadline date to the HSC Sponsored Programs Proposal Upload System.
Instructions for Converting Word Documents to PDF - you must convert your proposal document to a PDF file. You must have the full version of Adobe Acrobat to save and combine files as a single PDF. You will not be able to use the free Acrobat Reader to create the file.
- You must use Internet Explorer to enter the upload system.
- Please try to access the upload system before the deadline date (between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm) so that any log-in problems can be addressed.
- After uploading your document please wait: you will get a confirmation on your computer screen that your application was uploaded successfully.
- Applications that you have uploaded for the current deadline cycle can be viewed simply by logging into the upload system and clicking on the link to -step 2- View your proposals and/or upload proposal document.
