Cancer Development and Progression Pilot Grant Program

Deadline: 11:59 pm Monday, June 2, 2008

As members of the Cancer Development and Progression Program you are invited to submit applications for pilot grant funding. The purpose of this funding mechanism is to support collaborative research among members that has the potential for attracting extramural (especially NCI) funding.

GUIDELINES:

1. The proposed research must be a new collaborative project amongst two or more Cancer Center investigators; at least one researcher must be a primary member of the CDP Program.

2. The applications must be responsive to the objectives of one of the four themes identified below; please designate the appropriate theme or themes on the grant application cover page.

Aging and Cancer
Contact for additional information: Peter Hornsby (Hornsby@uthscsa.edu; 2-5080)
Aims: Aging is the largest risk factor for cancer. Major research questions - what are the mechanisms?
There are three areas of focus:
(a.) Cellular mechanisms that protect DNA, proteins and lipids from damage may increase life span and result in resistance to cancer development:
-- within a species; as a function of genetics/environment
-- across species; comparative biology approach
(b.) Age changes in the immune system, endocrine system, and control of stem cells, result in increased susceptibility to cancer and accelerated cancer development
(c.) Cellular aging (senescence) and apoptosis act in pathways that prevent or promote cancer.

Chronic Inflammation and Cancer
Contact for additional information: S.J. Gao (gaos@uthscsa.edu; 2-9030)
Facilitates inter- and intra-programmatic collaborative research on inflammation, infection, immunity and microenvironments that are related to cancer development and progression.

Genomic Integrity
Contacts for additional information: Z. Dave Sharp (sharp@uthscsa.edu; 7-7226); E. Paul Hasty (hastye@uthscsa.edu; 7-7278)
Supports intra-thematic collaborative research programs among members directed toward cellular responses to genomic damage.

Women's Cancer
Contact for additional information: Rajeshware Rao Tekmal (Tekmal@uthscsa.edu; 7-4935).
Focuses on three areas (Breast, Cervical, and ovarian cancers). Research projects with good translational potential and are specific to breast, cervical, and ovarian cancers will be considered. Funds should be used to develop preliminary data necessary to obtain federal funding.

3. Proposals may request funds up to $50K; however, the final funding level will be determined based on the number of proposals with high priority scores. Funds should not be used for faculty salaries or for travel. Scientific reviews by a Cancer Center panel of experts. Programmatic review will be conducted by the theme Leaders and Co-Leaders, and final funding decisions will be made based on both scientific merit and overall goals of the CDP program.

4. Applications must be received by 11:59 PM, Monday, June 2, 2008.

APPLICATION:

Certification of Proposal (COP)
Summary abstract (maximum 1 page)
Scientific plan (maximum 3 single-spaced pages) organized as follows: Background, Significance and Experimental Plan
Include statement of synergy of the collaborating investigator and how it will facilitate or greatly accelerate fundable research that would not be achievable through the efforts of a single laboratory.
Optional: Tables, figures and legends (maximum 2 pages)
