Grants.gov: Getting Started
Grants.gov allows organizations and individuals to electronically find and apply for competitive grant opportunities from all Federal grant-making agencies. Grants.gov will be THE single access point for over 1,000 grant programs offered by the 26 Federal grant-making agencies. By the end of fiscal year 2007, with few exceptions, all grant applications for these agencies will be submitted through Grants.gov.For principal investigators, project directors, and department/division/center administrative staff, the easiest way to get started with Grants.gov is to point your browser to the following links:
Preparing An Application For Submission To Grants.Gov
1. Download the free PureEdge viewer software and install it on your computer. You will need to download the software only once to each computer that you will use to prepare applications.
2. Use Grants.gov’s search features to find a funding opportunity, download the application package (forms and instructions).
3. Read the program solicitation carefully. Pay particular attention to the deadline time –the deadline time is often listed as Eastern Standard/Daylight time.
4. Open the application package with PureEdge. Complete all mandatory forms and upload required attachments.
5. If using a Mac, you will need use the designated alternative to PureEdge; for further information, go to http://www.grants.gov/MacSupport
6. Safe the file often; click the “Check for Errors” button.
7. The application (in PureEdge) will save itself as one document (.xfd extension) with attachments.
8. Route your Certification of Proposal (COP) (http://research.uthscsa.edu/osp/forms/cop.pdf) and budget to the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP). Fax review will save you a lot of time.
9. Bring your original, fully signed COP to OSP at the same time you upload your proposal to the OSP upload site (under development). Please allow at least five business days for review and upload.Helpful Tips
1. Use Internet Explorer, Firefox, Mozilla, or Safari.
2. You need to enable cookie support and pop-ups.
3. When naming files, don’t use spaces, hyphens, or special characters in the file.
4. Be sure to read both the agency solicitation AND the Grants.gov instructions.
5. PureEdge is only a file, not a website. You need to save the file to your hard drive before you begin entering info into the file. You may also wish to save the file to a shared drive.
6. Complete the 424 or 424 R&R first. It will populate other forms.
7. The file doesn’t automatically save. You have to click on SAVE to save the data entered.
8. Notify the person in OSP who reviews your proposals as soon as you know a proposal must be submitted through Grants.gov. If you don’t know who that person is, consult this list: http://research.uthscsa.edu/osp/forms/ProposalAssignments.xls
