Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals at UTHSCSA

line

All animals used for teaching, training, research, and any related activities by faculty, staff and students in UTHSCSA facilities or elsewhere shall be used and cared for in accordance with all applicable provisions of the Animal Welfare Act and other Federal statutes and regulations relating to the humane care and use of laboratory animals.

The University offers several courses in which laboratory animals are an integral part of the curriculum. Although students are encouraged to take advantage of every educational opportunity offered, they are not required to participate in manipulations involving laboratory animals. Students are to discuss any concerns they have before it becomes a problem. Alternative exercises may be substituted at the discretion of and in consultation with the course director.

The UTHSCSA complies with the Animal Welfare Act, the PHS Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the U.S. Government Principles for the Utilization and Care of Vertebrate Animals Used in Testing, Research and Training

The UTHSCSA has an Animal Welfare Assurance on file with the NIH Office of Protection from Research Risks; the assurance number is A3345-01. The UTHSCSA has been accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International since 1974.

The UTHSCSA has both an occupational health program and an education and training program for all personnel working with animals. Participation in the occupational health program is optional; participation in the training program is required.
