Proposals Involving the Use of Laboratory Animals

University policy requires that all projects which use animals for research, testing or teaching be reviewed and approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) prior to initiation of such activities. This must be done regardless of funding source.

Submit the following documents to IACUC through the Institutional Animal Care Program Office (IACP):

The Committee will review the application for compliance with PHS policy, the Animal Welfare Act and institutional policy.

After review and approval, an IACUC protocol number (access restricted to UTHSCSA campus) is assigned to the project.

This number must be included on any request for animal purchase or vivarial services. The application must be approved even if the animals are to be housed outside the University. The review process can take 30-45 days for certain applications. Investigators are encouraged to consult with the staff veterinarians (ext. 7-6166) during the development of experimental protocols to ensure proper completion of the protocols.

Improperly or incompletely prepared protocols can seriously delay the review process. For further details on the protocol review process, see the IACP pages or contact the IACP staff at ext. 7-3722.
