Department of Laboratory Animal Resources - Medical Care
Clinical Diagnostic Support The DLAR diagnostic laboratory supports the staff veterinarians in the diagnosis of spontaneous diseases, conducts preventive medicine surveys on University-owned animals, and monitors the quality of newly acquired animals. The laboratory can provide gross necropsy, histopathology, bacteriology, serum chemistry, serology, hematology and urinalysis support. The laboratory supports investigators by assisting with the diagnosis of disease problems in research animals and by making recommendations for their correction. These services are also available as research support to investigators on a fee-for-service basis. Investigators are encouraged to consult with the DLAR staff and veterinarians when they believe they have problems with their animals, during the development of experimental protocols, and during the research process. Euthanasia, using acceptable methods, will be performed by DLAR at no charge. Information concerning anesthetic and euthanasia agents, dosages, and route of administration has been compiled and is available from the DLAR office and the web site (in preparation). A CO2 chamber suitable for small animals is available for use by investigative personnel; it should not be removed from the housing facilities. Cold boxes are available in the various facilities for the storage and disposal of properly bagged carcasses. Access to the cold box in the central facility is controlled by a card reader. . . .
