  • Ensure that the use of animals in research is in accordance with institutional and federal guidelines and to assist the faculty whose research and teaching activities involve animals.
  • Review research proposals, no less than annually, in order to certify for the institution the necessity of using animals in research or teaching and to ensure that methods for the humane practice of animal maintenance and experimentation are used.
  • Conduct ongoing review of present use and future needs of the animal facilities.
  • Review the care and treatment of animals in all areas of the Health Science Center, at least semiannually, to assess compliance with Federal and institutional standards for appropriate care and treatment of animals. To review and advise semi-annually on the status of the entire program to include
  • occupational health program for individuals who have substantial laboratory animal contact;
  • training program regarding the use of animals in research; and
  • all laboratories where animals are used and or housed.
  • Review and advise in the development of management priorities in the areas that have an impact on academic efficiency and effectiveness to ensure that the services provided by Laboratory Animal Resources reflect the needs and interests of the academic community.
  • Keep appropriate records of reviews conducted in order to document to UTHSCSA administration, the Administrator of the USDA, and the Director of NIH that such reviews have been conducted and that any violations of established standards have been reported.
