Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

IACUC Protocol Review Process

Routes of Review*

Regular** -- goes to a Veterinarian, the 2 assigned reviewers assigned for that month, Chair/Vice-Chair

  • New projects which do not fall under full committee review
  • Most protocols that are Class A and B1
  • Identical to protocols closed out more than 1 year ago
  • Class C (transplantable tumors) for Rodents

Facilitated** -- goes to a Veterinarian, Chair/Vice-Chair

  • Progress Reports which did not receive FCR in the last year
  • Identical to protocols that are active or closed out (not more than 1 year ago).
  • Modifications which are a minor change to the protocol (adding a previously approved procedure, minor changes in procedure, adding a species)
  • Increase in number of animals forms

FCR (Full Committee Review) -- goes to a Veterinarian, 2 assigned reviewers, Chair/Vice-Chair

  • New B2, C and D protocols which involve the following:
    • primates, goats, pigs (or minipigs), calves, dogs, cats or rabbits.
  • Mice, rats, hamsters and guinea pigs which are class D or C which are not checked as transplantable tumors
  • All death as an endpoint (i.e. LD50 studies, aging studies)
  • All multiple survival surgery studies
  • Tumor burden studies
  • Modifications which are a major change to the protocol (addition of a new study, new procedures)

** Anything submitted to the IACP office may go FCR if requested by a member of the IACUC, regardless of whether or not they were the assigned reviewer of that protocol.

*Protocol may be returned to the Principal Investigator for Revisions at any stage of the Review Progress
